Besl Transfer Adds New Tractor and Trailer Outfit
to Speed Up Equipment Deliveries

In keeping with the demand of the heavy-hauling industry for speedy, dependable and economical service, The Besl Transfer Company announce their purchase of the very latest White 950 tandem axle tractor and Rogers Drag trailer. This is the first large trailer of this type on pneumatic tires to be operated in southern Ohio. It is especially designed for hauling heavy construction equipment, such as shovels, pavers, tractors and rollers, and has a capacity of 65 tons. Pictured below is the new Besl tractor and trailer outfit as it was in the process of moving a Lorain 75 weighing about 40 tons, from Cincinnati's river-front district.

Confidence in the future of the building and construction industry southern Ohio led The Besl Transfer Company to buy this new heavy-hauling outfit, which will enable them to better server their many contractor customers. Keeping abreast of the times and ever on the lookout for transportation equipment, that would better enable them to serve their customers more efficiently and economically, is the main reason why Frank Besl, the enterprising head of this progressive hauling company, attributes to the long and continued success of the company bearing his name.

Upon his return from the World War in 1920, Mr. Besl started in the hauling business in a very modest way with a 1½-ton truck. Hauling lumber and express packages were the principal items which Besl handled in the early days of his career. The unusual activity in the construction industry in 1922 led him to purchase his first dump truck, which had a capacity of 2½ tons. His dump-truck fleet grew rapidly. About 1925 they secured the hauling contract of The Moelder Coal Company and again increased their fleet of dump trucks.

In 1927 pneumatic-tired dump trucks were introduced for the first time. Mr. Besl immediately saw the many advantages of the pneumatic tire, and his company was one of the first in Cincinnati to replace all their solid-tired trucks. Another important step forward was taken by the company at the insistence of their contractor customers in 1928, when they purchased their first carryall, with which they were able to handle all kinds of heavy equipment, such as shovels, etc. In 1937 they added their first pneumatic-tired carryall, and it was the first one in southern Ohio. It was so successful they purchased another the same year.

In recent years the pick-up in the construction industry of southern Ohio has brought about improvement in the equipment-hauling business, as well as new problems. Speed and economy of operation are the prime factors in the continued success of all contractors. In consequence, expensive modern earthmoving equipment, such as power shovels, tractors, had to be kept in almost constant operation, and speeded from one job to another with as little delay as possible, in order to produce profits. To satisfy the need of their contractor customers for such a service, the Besl Company, after careful consideration, purchased the latest improved Rogers carryall. This modern trailer is pulled by a White tractor with tandem-driving axles, and, as this unit is equipped with the latest Westinghouse air-brakes throughout and the latest electric signaling devices, it is the fastest, safest and most efficient hauling outfit of its kind. The 26 General pneumatic tires make it almost impossible for this outfit to skid on any kind of pavement.

Included in the Besl Transfer Company fleet are 22 dump trucks, 4 winch trucks and 4 heavy-duty tractors, to pull the 4 carryall trailers. This modern fleet, backed by its own service department, enables this company to give the kind of service that holds and satisfies customers. They own and operate a modern garage building, in which their office is located at Cooper and Apple Sreets in Cincinnati. Besides Frank, there are three of his brothers-Edward, Urban and Lester-connected with the company, and every employee is out to please the customer.

Rogers Trailer Equipped with Eight Wheels

The Rogers D-65-D semi-trailer, recently purchased by Besl Transfer Co., and illustrated in this issue, is equipped with sixteen (16) 9.75-15 12-ply tires on eight wheels and four rocking axles. Arranged to permit a maximum of longitudinal and lateral oscillation, each wheel and tire carries an equal portion of the load imposed. As each wheel adjusts itself to road irregularities, the possibility of tire failure is reduced to a minimum, while the load transported maintains a level position. Sufficient clearance is provided that any tire may be changed without the slipping or removing of axles.

Wide flange H beams from the nucleus of the frame, which is completely electrically welded wherever steel meets steel. The trailer having an overall length of 36 feet 8 inches and a width of 10 fee provides a clear loading deck 18 feet in length and 29 inches high. Mechanical brakes on all eight (8) rear wheels are controlled by a brake hand-wheel on the gooseneck deck and by Westinghouse air from the truck cab. Each braking system is designed to work independently or in conjunction with the other. Rogers' patented system of rods and compensating levers maintain an equal braking pressure on all wheels regardless of the position in which they are oscillated.

26 General Tires Used on New Besl Tractor-Trailer Unit

Modern truck transportation is specialized. Individual tire requirements become more exacting every day. GENERAL builds a special type and size truck tire for every need. Each is designed to do its particular work at the lowest possible operating cost. When the Besl Transfer Company of Cincinnati contracted for a new White tandem axle tractor and Rogers trailer, they specified 9.75-20 GENERAL Traction Tread tires as original equipment for the tractor, and 9.75-15 GENERAL Low Platform Trailer tires for the trailer.

On this Tractor-Trailer outfit, designed to transport extremely heavy loads, the Besl Company knew, when it specified GENERAL Truck tires that these tires have three outstanding features which insure greater mileage performance:

Are Stronger-All plies are full plies anchored at the bead-no floating "breaker-strips"-every inch and every ounce is there for just one purpose-to produce more miles and a lower cost for you.
Are Cooler-They flex uniformly without that heat-producing "hinging action" of ordinary breaker-strip tires. Heat kills the life of cords and cuts down the miles in a tire. GENERALS are cool-that's why they run more miles at a lower cost.
Have "Compact Rubber" Treads-All tires stretch due to fatigue in the fabric, but GENERALS, having no idle, halfway plies, stretch least of all. The tread is kept compact and compressed against the road-that's why it produces more miles and reduces cost.

GENERAL Truck Tires are sold and serviced by men with factory training. Their judgement and advice, based on experience, is worth money to any truck operator who seeks to reduce his hauling cost. Tire size specifications were worked out by Sohngen & Bischoff, Cincinnati distributors of General Tires for twenty-two years.
